Are you a tech addict?

Results of a simple survey for technology addiction

A total of 117 respondents responded towards our survey form that were distributed in order to know how addicted users are towards technology. Most of them were females, with the age range of 18-25 years old. 84.4% of them find themselves clung to the internet, realizing that the amount of time spent on digital devices and internet had been increasing. Most of them have at least two digital devices in hand. People rate themselves average from the scale 1-5 anticipating to go online, feeling uncomfortable for leaving out their devices or unable to connect to the internet (Wieland, 2005). In 2005, 9-15 million people in United States used the internet every day. Every three months the rate of use increases by 25%.

"As of March 2014, there were 176 million addicts, up from 79 million in the same period last year. Females accounted for 52 percent of addicts, while the rest were males. It comes as no surprise that teens and college students are part of this group as their youth has coincided with the mobile revolution" (Harjani, 2014).

It is obvious that the generation now is getting attached to digital devices, and this lead them to include the need of Wi-Fi into their hierarchy of needs. However, technology helps in many ways. As for university students living far away from home, technology is the only hope to keep in touch, to carry on research, to complete assignments and for entertainment purposes. People evolve with time, slowly changing to cope with the pace of the society. We improve with technology. Technology yes indeed has its pros and cons. Cons is the addiction towards technology can be dangerous just like phubbing when you no longer see people's face because all they are facing is their mobile phone. No matter how much addicted you are, no doubt that technology bring us together. Be in control with what you use and who you are.

  2. I realize that in this survey, most of the respondents have at least 2 mobile devices beside them. I think this phenomenon is very common. This is because every university student needs to have a laptop for academic purposes to complete their assignments and also final year project. Without a laptop or notebook, university life will be very tough to them. Other than laptop, most of the students also own a smartphone to keep in touch with each other. It is a device to make communication easier. Hence, I think that it is normal to have 2 or more than 2 mobile devices. However, I think it is not good to spend too much times on mobile devices because it does not only will lead to tech addiction but also will cause negative effect on our health. For instance, insomnia. Appropriate usage of electronic devices is crucial in our daily lives. Time management is very important for students. :D

  3. Yes, of course I am one of it. Every day I can’t wake up without setting my alarm on my smart phone. Well, technology brings a shine to me for opening my eyes over the world. And it is giving me a chance for people knowing me through Facebook, instagram and twitter. Now, I am 23 years old already and it gives me a new identity of a shy girl like me by posting pictures or status through it. This technology makes it as one of my important massive part of my life. It would be impossible for me to go out for a day without my phones. Moreover, communicate through phones gave me some of the confidence to speak out of my rights. This is because I have a deep emotional current that I can’t even explain it. But now, I have learned that it is okay if I say ‘no’.

  5. In my opinion, for sure youngsters nowadays are all tech addicts, take a look here, ten years ago, our childhood have play ground, football and all outdoor activities, but now? The kids now only get iPad, iPhone, and more iPad, more iPhone.
Without our conscious, technology gadgets had already become part of our needs. Is no longer a luxuries, but a necessities to live, because it is way too convenient, other than entertainment, it plays role to communication, working, education, financial management and more.
Tech addicts is only the urge to have the latest technology, it is nothing wrong actually, but still we need to have some controls on it, everything need a limit.

  6. Now, we have a new trend that everyone must have their mobile phone in their pocket or bag. We can notice that most of the people will stick with their mobile phones all the time. I have at least two mobile phones. When I am in rush, I usually use both of my phones at the same time. One to answer call and one to text and reply email. Other people may think that I am so busy. I think I am not one of the tech addicts. What I usually do with my mobile phone is when there is call or notifications pop out from WhatsApp or WeChat, I will only use it. Most of the time, I will choose to sleep in the house rather than being a phubber. When I was in my hometown, I was busy with my work and most of the time hangs out with friends and family. However, it does not mean that other people are not tech addicts. I will try to advice my friends to stop being phubber in front of me.
