PorNoGraphy please?

As mass media consumption is increasing in this technology flooded era, its function has obviously changed from to bring human conveniences to a sense of need in daily life. Thus, there’s a modified basic human needs for this new tech-flooded society, derived for people in this 21st century from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, with internet as the most basic needs despite physiological needs. (This hierarchy has actually shown in previous post).

However, this phenomenon does not seem to bring human its conveniences as it supposed to, where it is up to certain circumstances only. Wondering why do I create such statement? The invention of internet indeed has brought human being more conveniences than the past, however, because it is too easy to access to, thus people have started to ‘utilize’ it not for the sake of conveniences anymore, but for ‘entertainment’. A study conducted by a British professor in year 1995 has found that internet has the most view search for pornography. As we know, internet is now being regarded as a global electronic village. A village may consist of young kids as well; the community is not only made up from those technology-literate adults and teenagers.

It is normal to see children in supermarket whom sitting in trolley or baby stroller with a mobile phone or a tablet in their hand, swiping their fingers all over across the screen and look professional in devices. Parents are intentionally in giving their phone or tablet to kids to make sure kids will not make any messes in their shopping. Imagine, these kids are contacted with digital devices in their very young age, they are still innocent to go online, surfing on net for information; while we adults are streaming pornography with full of enjoyment.

As the population of children usage on internet is getting greater, although they surf more for gaming at this moment, they might soon get affected by such porn viewing behavior by the adults. According to poll survey on kids’ usage behavior pattern by KidSay, reported by e-Marketer in U.S. for the year 2014, some kids are streaming for videos as well and it is the second activity they did, despite playing online games, on internet. Hence, kids might indirectly and gradually expose to the high risk of viewing pornography accidentally and unintentionally.

Hence, we as a matured adult, shouldn’t we create a safer environment in web for our younger generations? Otherwise, we should have kept them educated and by their side as guardian for the time they are on internet.

  1. How worried should we be when online pornography is easy to access. It is found in pop-up ads, discussion boards, chat rooms, and in misleading domain names. Often times, pornographic Web sites display sexually explicit material on the first page, accessible to anyone who visits the Web site. Well, even if we are convinced about how harmful it is to children, is there anything that can be done about it? And isn't it the job of parents, to keep children safe online? There are already many regulations and laws to protect children at their best from pornography exposure. Like The Communications Decency Act (CDA) was passed as part of the Telecommunication Act of 1996. The CDA criminalized the knowing transmission of
“obscene” or “indecent” communications to children under 18 years of age. Technology is made with beautiful purposes to ease our burdens and people misused it. Children need technology as well, to catch up with the world's pace. Parents can take more responsibility and effort in filtering sites before allowing their children to access the internet. There are many applications that filters sites and passwords for security. Parents have to ensure the safe surfing of their children before allowing them to take charges of the digital devices. Who to be blamed when the power to access the internet is given by parents?

  2. There is no point of playing finger pointing games after things had happened. Neither the porn viewers nor the kids to be blamed. Instead of waiting kids being exposed, unintentionally, to the porn contents on internet, why not parents or guardians educating them Instead terms of looking for surfing contents? Prevention is better than cure, aren't it true? Parental guardian is important enough to ensure a kids is safe for every single content that kid surf on internet. Basic education such as media literacy is supposed be exposed to kids as a precaution step before allowing kids to be exposed to the world of digital, right?

  3. As I know that it is not only one porn site but there are more than 20 million porn sites. In social networking sites, porn materials are always pop out by itself. Social network users may feel curious to click on the site and view into the page. Sometimes, the porn materials are not from the porn sites but online game such as sexy model. For example in fighting online games, girls who wear mini skirt and sexy deep V shirt appear in the game. So, this means that social network users will touch on pornography materials when they play online games.

Snapchat is a mobile application which is specially designed for teenagers who aged less than 16 years old. Snapchat is an application that allows you to take photos or videos of yourself and send to your friends. The picture or video that u send will disappear in 10 seconds. Some of the Snapchat users like to send inappropriate pictures of themselves (perhaps some naked photos and sexy photos). These pornography materials have caused danger to the users themselves although it will disappear in 10 seconds.

Our parents are not telling us how to handle the issues from social media such as pornography in social networking sites. Before the age of technology, we tried very hard to find porn but today we have to try very hard to avoid porn.

    2. I agree that porn sites are available everywhere these days and they are sometimes unavoidable because porn website or porn advertisement pop out easily even though we do not have any intention to watch it. As adults, I believe that we are able to have self-control to avoid us from contacting any pornography materials but kids who are curious are not able to control themselves because they do not know how to differentiate right or wrong. Not only parents and educational institutions should work together to cope with this problem, the whole society should look at this matter seriously.

  5. We are concerned the number of people who access to pornography sites increased drastically. We also may know people access it because factor of sexually aggressive and easy to access its sites. These days it is available where ever we are and could be automatically opened with the pop-up blocks without any intention for it. Well, these days’ children are also victims of this unhealthy culture. We as adults have to control it by paying much attention to kids who do not know about it. As Sandy says, not only parents and education take part to cope this problem, but we as a whole society must take it seriously.

  6. Even though our government already taken many actions to tackle potnography websites, it is still seems to be useless, when one porn sites being closed, another 10 is being generated. Even though the online censorship is getting more enforced now, I think self censorship is much more important to stop pornography among children.
Children are so easily to get influenced, they are like white paper and we are painting on it. Parents play a very significant role in helping censored the content shows to children in order to stop pornography. Family education, parenting is the key point to stop this issue.
