The documentary
“My Digital Addiction”, had shown us how a journalist who had need to stay
connected with social media all the time to get himself updated about the news
in the society, realized that himself was kind of addicted to the digital
devices such as mobile gadgets and laptop after being commented by his friends
and family, which he is being told that he had spent most of the time with
those devices doing swapping, scrolling, commenting and updating; rather than spending
his time with the people around him. He then tried out to put aside all his
phone, tablet and everything else and went for a camp, a Digital Detox camp.
It is a camp that
had market itself as a place for tech addicts to be forcibly removed from their
devices. The camp was fulfilled with activities that had tried to get every
participants to get closer to the nature, at the same time rediscovering the art
of meaningful conversation or typing a journal using a typewriter and appreciate
all of its flaws. After the camp, he found himself had learned to reduce the
usage of smartphones and other gadgets as only a handful of interactions are
really worth our time or emotion.
After watching
this documentary, I realized that even the organizer of the digital detox camp
and the journalist were too not confident enough to say that would this change
make a long term difference. And now I think, would anyone of us really can resist
from the addiction? And if we would have to, how long can ourselves could try
to stay away from all those digital gadgets? I somehow doubted on my own
determination. What do you think?
Honestly speaking, I could not make it.
ReplyDeleteI very rely on my gadgets, especially my cell phone, you can take away many things from me, but now my phone, because I need it to read, at least.
You see, phone nowadays are no longer only a communication tool, it also synchronize with many different purposes, a book reader, a social tool, for education purpose, grocery, relationships, entertainments and too many to be counted.
It is already deep rooted in our life and we could not simply separate or throw it out from our life, it might take many years, step by step process to complete this difficult task.
But one question in mind, what's the harm of using these gadgets? I personally find it did not harms, how about you?
Digital Detox Camp might be an effective campaign to let the participants to realize that they are too addicted to mobile devices. However, the true 'detox' is impossible achievable in the 21st century, where the community is flooded by technology.
ReplyDeleteIt is hardly for one to totally get rid of devices in a day because it is an important communication tool for people to stay connected with each other. Indeed, this is not the reason to give way for addiction. In this phrase, as I said it to stay connected, is merely for basic communication as the first intention of mobile devices were first invented.
Well its truth with what Choo said. I also can't make it when I m not holding my gadgets anywhere I go.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think in this 21st century, it is very hard for everyone to get rid of their electronic gadgets. Agree with Choo and Pei Jun, hand phone is no longer a tool for communication only. The society has evolved and so do our phones and technology. We need smartphones to contact each other, to bond with friends and family members who are not around us. Without this technology, are you able to contact someone who is in overseas immediately? The answer is NOT. I understand that the intention of Digital Detox Camp is good but it will not work because electronic gadgets especially smartphones have become human beings' basic needs. I believe people will understand the intention of this camp but there are not many people will go to join it.
ReplyDeleteWell, me personally could reduce the usage of gadgets. It is the purpose of communication and assignments in university that makes me overuse it. When I am home, I do not really touch my phone or go online to Facebook. This is probably because I am busy with the hustle and bustle of house chores. I would probably prefer to spend my days shopping, dancing through my fingers on my piano, doing some readings, watching the television, and family bonding session or a family trip perhaps! I did not mention that I can totally live without my gadgets, but could be reduced the usage. In university, the usage is up to 90% but at home it would be up till 45%. Putting gadgets aside and spend more time with people, you'll never regret it.
ReplyDeleteSame with what Tan Mei Sann said, I also can reduce the usage of gadgets. This is because of the assignments, I always use laptop rather than my mobile phone. Sometimes, I busy with my assignment until I forget to online to update my social networking sites, for instance news stories on Facebook and WeChat Moment. When I want to go to bed, I will not scroll, swap or update on social networking sites. It does not mean that I do not use my gadgets for the whole day but I only use it to spend my free time. Mostly, I am busy with my assignments in university and hence it automatically reduces my usage of gadgets.
